{"id":195418,"date":"2008-07-10T17:18:00","date_gmt":"2008-07-10T22:18:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2008\/07\/10\/zimbabwe-3\/"},"modified":"2008-07-10T17:18:00","modified_gmt":"2008-07-10T22:18:00","slug":"zimbabwe-3","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2008\/07\/10\/zimbabwe-3\/","title":{"rendered":"Zimbabwe"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Well, it looks like <a href=\"http:\/\/africa.reuters.com\/sport\/news\/usnBAN945385.html\">FIFA is weighing in on Zimbabwe and Mbeki&#8217;s support of Mugabe<\/a>, as they are now making statements that seem to imply that the world cup may be moved because of &#8220;regional instability&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>As lame as it sounds, this may be the only thing to keep Mbeki from being Mugabe&#8217;s agent in this matter.<\/p>\n<p>Still the news is generally not good with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/news\/printedition\/asection\/la-fg-zimbabwe10-2008jul10,0,6703249.story\">ZANU-PF planning to escalate the violence against the opposition<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>As to negotiations, were are getting conflicting reports, and <a href=\"http:\/\/iht.com\/articles\/reuters\/2008\/07\/10\/africa\/OUKWD-UK-ZIMBABWE-CRISIS.php\"> Tsvangirai has just denied that there are any talks in process<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Botswana has taken what I believe to be the proper stance, saying that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mmegi.bw\/index.php?sid=1&amp;aid=1&amp;dir=2008\/July\/Monday7\">they do not recognize Mugabe as president<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Interestingly, we have reports that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-1031975\/The-Dirty-Half-Dozen-The-generals-ruthless-bloodthirsty-Mugabe.html#\">Mugabe has been effectively sidelined by the 6 top members of the state security apparatus<\/a>, and that they are <span style=\"font-weight:bold;\">more<\/span> brutal than Mugabe.<\/p>\n<p>We are also seeing increasing calls for sanctions, which, predicably, the <a href=\"http:\/\/afp.google.com\/article\/ALeqM5jEbYc803Nmg_b3vEjSV9Mq-CUV7A\">Mugabe regime called racist<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Well, it looks like FIFA is weighing in on Zimbabwe and Mbeki&#8217;s support of Mugabe, as they are now making statements that seem to imply that the world cup may be moved because of &#8220;regional instability&#8221;.
