{"id":195661,"date":"2008-06-24T17:25:00","date_gmt":"2008-06-24T22:25:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2008\/06\/24\/economics-update-432\/"},"modified":"2008-06-24T17:25:00","modified_gmt":"2008-06-24T22:25:00","slug":"economics-update-432","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2008\/06\/24\/economics-update-432\/","title":{"rendered":"Economics Update"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/2008\/06\/24\/news\/economy\/consumer_confidence\/index.htm?postversion=2008062410\">Consumer confidence plunges to the 5th lowest level ever<\/a>, 50.4, as opposed to the predicted 57, from 58.1 last month.<\/p>\n<p>Considering that <a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/2008\/06\/24\/real_estate\/home_prices_CaseShiller_April\/index.htm?postversion=2008062410\">home prices are down yet again<\/a>, this time the Case-Shiller index was down 1.4% from March, and 15.3% year over year, it&#8217;s natural that people won&#8217;t feel confident.<\/p>\n<p>These numbers spooked the currency markets too, with <a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/2008\/06\/24\/markets\/dollar\/index.htm?postversion=2008062410\">the dollar trending down<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/2008\/06\/24\/markets\/oil_prices.ap\/index.htm\">Oil prices are up again<\/a>, largely because of concerns of instability in Nigeria, though retail gas prices are <a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/2008\/06\/24\/news\/economy\/gas\/index.htm\">down $0.003 from yesterday<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>And just in case you are wondering, energy inflation <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">is<\/span> hitting prices more generally, with <a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/2008\/06\/24\/news\/dow_prices.ap\/index.htm\">Dow Chemical raising prices 25%<\/a>, even though it raised prices 20% last month, and <a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/\/news\/newsfeeds\/articles\/djf500\/200806241102DOWJONESDJONLINE000381_FORTUNE5.htm\">UPDATE: Lowe&#8217;s is seeing &#8220;unprecedented&#8221; price hikes from its suppliers<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Stagflation, here we come.<\/p>\n<p>As to the &#8220;stag&#8221; part, the fact that <a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/2008\/06\/24\/news\/international\/toyota.ap\/index.htm?postversion=2008062407\">Toyota is scaling back its sales goals<\/a> because of weakness in the economy, even though there are <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">are months long waiting lists for the Prius<\/span>, would indicate that no one is making good sales right now.<\/p>\n<p>In the interest of fairness though, there are reports that <a href=\"http:\/\/pogue.blogs.nytimes.com\/2008\/06\/11\/where-are-all-those-priuses\/\">Toyota is cutting back on Prius shipments to the US<\/a>, because they can get more money in Europe.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Consumer confidence plunges to the 5th lowest level ever, 50.4, as opposed to the predicted 57, from 58.1 last month.
