{"id":195672,"date":"2008-06-23T17:18:00","date_gmt":"2008-06-23T22:18:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2008\/06\/23\/economics-update-433\/"},"modified":"2008-06-23T17:18:00","modified_gmt":"2008-06-23T22:18:00","slug":"economics-update-433","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2008\/06\/23\/economics-update-433\/","title":{"rendered":"Economics Update"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I missed this when it was announced <span style=\"font-weight:bold;\">late Friday afternoon<\/span>, but two moremonoliners hit junk status, <a href=\"http:\/\/ftalphaville.ft.com\/blog\/2008\/06\/20\/13958\/moodys-junks-fgic\/\">FGIC<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/ftalphaville.ft.com\/blog\/2008\/06\/20\/13959\/xl-capital-and-xl-fi\">XL Capital and XL Financial<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>I wonder when all of the monoliners will be junk rated, and I also wonder why this is not true <span style=\"font-weight:bold;\">now<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>This means more than just that these insurers can no longer realistically write policies.  These downgrades come with significant penalties, as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/apps\/news?pid=20601087&amp;sid=aZFL_bKzqxYU&amp;refer=home\">MBIA&#8217;s statement that&#8217;s it downgrade will force it to make $4.7 billion in payments to creditors<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>When they got downgraded, the terms of their loans changed.<\/p>\n<p>In energy  we have <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/id\/25321317\">oil up<\/a> despite the Saudi meeting, and <a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/2008\/06\/23\/news\/economy\/gas\/index.htm\">retail gas prices falling<\/a>.  Hopefully this will bring a few months of stability at the pump.<\/p>\n<p>The dollar strengthened, largely on <a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/2008\/06\/23\/markets\/dollar\/index.htm?postversion=2008062310\">crappy growth in the Euro zone<\/a>, which would suggest that the ECB will hold off rate hikes for a while.<\/p>\n<p>In real estate, we have <a href=\"http:\/\/bloomberg.com\/apps\/news?pid=20601213&amp;sid=aLrjvgP1ysR8&amp;refer=home\">Lehman predicting more losses for Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac<\/a>, which should come as no surprise at all.<\/p>\n<p>After when <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pressdemocrat.com\/article\/20080619\/NEWS07\/806190337\/1036\/BUSINESS01&amp;title=Bay_Area_housing_prices_fall_21_7_\">&frac14; of Bay Area home sales in May had been in foreclosure<\/a>, and statewide <a href=\"http:\/\/www.signonsandiego.com\/news\/business\/20080619-9999-1b19homes.html\">home sales hit a 13-year low<\/a>, it&#8217;s not like there will be a whole bunch of players making money.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s why George W. Bush&#8217;s ownership is becoming a Pwnership society, with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2008\/06\/21\/us\/21renters.html?partner=rssuserland&amp;emc=rss&amp;pagewanted=all\">home ownership falling to below where it was when he announced the initiative to get people to buy houses<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>BTW, if you think that this won&#8217;t effect you, you are wrong.  We now have an estimate of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/id\/25288161\">properties falling by $1.46 Trillion<\/a>, which, by my quick envelope calculation, means that state and local governments are looking at revenue shortfalls on property taxes on the order of $1.5 billion\/month.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I missed this when it was announced late Friday afternoon, but two moremonoliners hit junk status, FGIC and XL Capital and XL Financial.
