{"id":195690,"date":"2008-06-21T05:10:00","date_gmt":"2008-06-21T10:10:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2008\/06\/21\/us-talking-with-lithuania-about-missile-interceptor-location\/"},"modified":"2008-06-21T05:10:00","modified_gmt":"2008-06-21T10:10:00","slug":"us-talking-with-lithuania-about-missile-interceptor-location","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2008\/06\/21\/us-talking-with-lithuania-about-missile-interceptor-location\/","title":{"rendered":"US Talking With Lithuania About Missile Interceptor Location"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It appears that because the Poles are getting cold feet, or demanding more for the base, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ft.com\/cms\/s\/0\/8bbcdf7e-3cb6-11dd-b958-0000779fd2ac.html?nclick_check=1\">they are talking with Lithuania about locating the missiles there<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This means a number of things:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>The relatively new Polish government is not being as cooperative as they would like.<\/li>\n<li>That most other nations are not interested (the Lithuanians really hate the Russians)<\/li>\n<li>That this missile defense installation is directed against the Russians, and not the Iranians.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>The last point is simple:  If you have a sub optimal location, one that is too far north to protect parts of Turkey, Greece, and Italy, starting negotiations with a country that is <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">further<\/span> north, and hence <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">less<\/span> well suited to intercepting Iranian missiles, but just as well suited to intercepting a <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Russian<\/span> strike.<\/p>\n<p>What is going on is simple:  This is Republicans trying to recreate the cold war, because it benefits them politically.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It appears that because the Poles are getting cold feet, or demanding more for the base, they are talking with Lithuania about locating the missiles there.
