{"id":195717,"date":"2008-06-19T18:48:00","date_gmt":"2008-06-19T23:48:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2008\/06\/19\/zimbabwe-update-25\/"},"modified":"2008-06-19T18:48:00","modified_gmt":"2008-06-19T23:48:00","slug":"zimbabwe-update-25","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2008\/06\/19\/zimbabwe-update-25\/","title":{"rendered":"Zimbabwe Update"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Things are not looking good there.<\/p>\n<p>First, we have <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2008\/06\/19\/world\/africa\/19zimbabwe.html?ref=world\">Mbeki visiting Zimbabwe<\/a>, and my best guess would be that he told Mugabe that he was doing just fine.  Certainly Mbeki&#8217;s visit did nothing to <a href=\"http:\/\/afp.google.com\/article\/ALeqM5hhZgBvIQQxMbfHwZ3je3QKZotn8w\">prevent Mugabe from expelling a UN human rights official<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It increasingly appears that the Jacob Zuma, who is under investigation for corruption, is the only leader in the ANC who is showing moral authority.  This time, he&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.smh.com.au\/news\/world\/zimbabwe-runoff-unlikely-to-be-fair-says-south-african-leader\/2008\/06\/18\/1213770733909.html\">saying that the runoff has been tainted by Mugabe&#8217;s actions<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Assuming he stays out of jail, Zuma should succeed Mbeki shortly, which would be to the benefit of everyone in sub-Saharan Africa.<\/p>\n<p>It is also worth noting that Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Odinga, himself no stranger to stolen elections, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.iht.com\/articles\/ap\/2008\/06\/17\/america\/NA-GEN-US-Kenya.php\">has called on Mugabe to step down<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, we have the continuing problem of violence by the opposition&#8217;s skulls against ZANU-PF batons and pipes.  The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2008\/WORLD\/africa\/06\/19\/zimbabwe.violence\/index.html\">mayor of Harare and 4 MDC activists bodies were found bludgeoned to death<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Things are not looking good there.
