{"id":195744,"date":"2008-06-17T17:27:00","date_gmt":"2008-06-17T22:27:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2008\/06\/17\/economics-update-437\/"},"modified":"2008-06-17T17:27:00","modified_gmt":"2008-06-17T22:27:00","slug":"economics-update-437","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2008\/06\/17\/economics-update-437\/","title":{"rendered":"Economics Update"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We now have the Fed&#8217;s report on national industrial activity, and <a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/2008\/06\/17\/news\/economy\/industrial_production.ap\/index.htm\">the may disappoints<\/a>, with activity falling 0.2% when an 0.1% increase had been predicted by economists.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m not sure if it factors in inflation, but if it does not, then <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/aponline\/business\/AP-Economy.html?_r=1&amp;hp&amp;oref=slogin\">those numbers are absolutely horrific<\/a>, as the producer price index rose 1.4% in May, which is grim&#8230;.Over the last year, the PPI has gone up 7.2%.<\/p>\n<p>Note that this is going on while <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/id\/25207855\">housing starts fell 3.3%<\/a>, which is the lowest rate since March of 1991, 17 years.<\/p>\n<p>No wonder that the <a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/2008\/06\/16\/news\/economy\/builders_confidence\/index.htm?postversion=2008061615\">builders&#8217; confidence survey just hit a record low<\/a>, matching the record established in December of last year.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, that doesn&#8217;t take into account that the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/id\/25160675\/for\/cnbc\/\">National Association of Realtors<\/a> isn&#8217;t getting the numbers that they report right.  They claimed that NJ home sales were up 4% in the Q1 when they were down 30%&#8230;.that&#8217;s a hell of a &#8220;mistake&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s no wonder that Goldman Sachs <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/id\/25209088\">is suggesting that banks may need to raise another $65 billion<\/a> to cover mortgage losses.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s even less of a wonder that <a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/2008\/06\/17\/news\/dividends.we.fall.fortune\/index.htm?postversion=2008061711\">investors are waiting for more dividend cuts from banks<\/a>.  No profit should mean no dividends.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, the Fed is <a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/2008\/06\/17\/news\/economy\/fed_credit.ap\/index.htm\">continuing to let banks get free money for sh%$ pile assets<\/a>, this time to the tune of $75 billion.<\/p>\n<p>There is good news in energy though, with both <a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/2008\/06\/17\/markets\/oil\/index.htm\">oil<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/2008\/06\/17\/news\/economy\/gasoline_prices\/index.htm\">retail gasoline<\/a> coming down a bit today.<\/p>\n<p>The standard wisdom would suggest that this was because of a strengthening dollar, but <a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/2008\/06\/17\/markets\/dollar.ap\/index.htm\">the greenback fell today<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We now have the Fed&#8217;s report on national industrial activity, and the may disappoints, with activity falling 0.2% when an 0.1% increase had been predicted by economists.
