{"id":195793,"date":"2008-06-13T17:22:00","date_gmt":"2008-06-13T22:22:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2008\/06\/13\/ireland-rejects-eu-treaty\/"},"modified":"2008-06-13T17:22:00","modified_gmt":"2008-06-13T22:22:00","slug":"ireland-rejects-eu-treaty","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2008\/06\/13\/ireland-rejects-eu-treaty\/","title":{"rendered":"Ireland Rejects EU Treaty"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>They <a href=\"http:\/\/iht.com\/articles\/2008\/06\/13\/europe\/14ireland.php\">voted it down in a referendum<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>There have been a couple of problems with the EU efforts to streamline how they operate:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>There appears to be an organizational insulate many senior career bureaucrats from &#8220;political interference&#8221;, which means insulating their decisions from democracy, which was seen as a negative by the Irish voters because it <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">is<\/span> a negative.<\/li>\n<li>The voters are looking at a 250+ page document, and they have no confidence that <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">anyone<\/span> can understand what it means.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If the EU comes back with a document where decision making rests in the hands of elected representatives, and one that is short enough to understand, they will likely get approval.<\/p>\n<p>The US constitution is under 10 pages.
