{"id":195795,"date":"2008-06-13T17:17:00","date_gmt":"2008-06-13T22:17:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2008\/06\/13\/zimbabwe-is-getting-worse\/"},"modified":"2008-06-13T17:17:00","modified_gmt":"2008-06-13T22:17:00","slug":"zimbabwe-is-getting-worse","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2008\/06\/13\/zimbabwe-is-getting-worse\/","title":{"rendered":"Zimbabwe is Getting Worse"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We have <a href=\"http:\/\/www.iht.com\/articles\/2008\/06\/12\/africa\/12zimbabwe.php\">food aid intended for children seized and handed out at a Mugabe rally<\/a>, which would be bad parody if it weren&#8217;t true.<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;ve also had MDC&#8217;s number two man, Secretary General Tendai Biti, <a href=\"http:\/\/allafrica.com\/stories\/200806120686.html\">arrested<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.iht.com\/articles\/ap\/2008\/06\/12\/news\/Zimbabwe.php\">charged with treason<\/a>, which carries a death penalty, for writing a document describing a transition to MDC rule.<\/p>\n<p>It appears that the judiciary is functioning on some level though, as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.iht.com\/articles\/ap\/2008\/06\/13\/africa\/AF-GEN-Zimbabwe.php\">a judge has directed the police to bring him to court tomorrow<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Mugabe is merrily escalating the violance, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.iht.com\/articles\/reuters\/2008\/06\/11\/africa\/OUKWD-UK-ZIMBABWE-ELECTION.php\">deploying more &#8216;war vetrans&#8217; to the campaign<\/a>, and telling them that they should be <a href=\"http:\/\/www.iht.com\/articles\/reuters\/2008\/06\/13\/africa\/OUKWD-UK-ZIMBABWE-ELECTION.php\">Mugabe says war vets ready for battle<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The UN secretary general is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.iht.com\/articles\/ap\/2008\/06\/11\/news\/UN-GEN-UN-Zimbabwe.php\">sending Haile Menkerios as a high ranking envoy to Zimbabwe<\/a> in an attempt to resolve this issue, but I do not think that it will do any good.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We have food aid intended for children seized and handed out at a Mugabe rally, which would be bad parody if it weren&#8217;t true.
