{"id":196306,"date":"2008-05-09T16:37:00","date_gmt":"2008-05-09T21:37:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2008\/05\/09\/economics-update-462\/"},"modified":"2008-05-09T16:37:00","modified_gmt":"2008-05-09T21:37:00","slug":"economics-update-462","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2008\/05\/09\/economics-update-462\/","title":{"rendered":"Economics Update"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We have another sign of recession, <a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/2008\/05\/09\/news\/economy\/trade_balance\/index.htm?postversion=2008050910\">imports falling sharply in March<\/a>, which indicates a decrease in consumer demand.<\/p>\n<p>It also appears that the decisions by the Bank of England and ECB to target inflation may be <a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/2008\/05\/09\/markets\/euro_dollar.ap\/index.htm?postversion=2008050907\">putting an end to the brief dollar rally<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In energy, we have <a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/2008\/05\/09\/markets\/oil_records\/index.htm?postversion=2008050910\">Oil settings new record<\/a>, $126.20\/bbl, and <a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/2008\/05\/09\/news\/economy\/gas_prices\/index.htm?postversion=2008050907\">gas hitting a new record<\/a>, $3.671\/gal.<\/p>\n<p>It should be noted that much of our trade deficit is oil, but the number dropped even with increasing oil prices.  Things are slowing down a <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">lot<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>I would note that there are signs that the credit crunch is no spreading to insurance, with <a href=\"http:\/\/biz.yahoo.com\/ap\/080508\/earns_american_international_group.html\">AIG posting a 1st quarter loss of $7.8 billion<\/a>, and making plans to issue more stock to raise needed capital.<\/p>\n<p>If the insurance industry goes balls up in any significant way, it&#8217;s going to be effecting a lot more people.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, we have <a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/2008\/05\/08\/real_estate\/bloated_inventories_expand\/index.htm?postversion=2008050816\">housing inventories continuing to rise<\/a>, 3.5% in April, and 6% year over year.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We have another sign of recession, imports falling sharply in March, which indicates a decrease in consumer demand.
