{"id":196596,"date":"2008-04-10T05:02:00","date_gmt":"2008-04-10T10:02:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2008\/04\/10\/the-smoking-gun-on-torture\/"},"modified":"2008-04-10T05:02:00","modified_gmt":"2008-04-10T10:02:00","slug":"the-smoking-gun-on-torture","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2008\/04\/10\/the-smoking-gun-on-torture\/","title":{"rendered":"The Smoking Gun on Torture"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We now have a report out of ABC news that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.abcnews.go.com\/TheLaw\/LawPolitics\/story?id=4583256&amp;page=1\">high ranking Bush administration officials discussed specific torture methods<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>According the reports, this was discussed at a &#8220;Principals Committee&#8221; meeting, and that, &#8220;At the time, the Principals Committee included Vice President Cheney, former National Security Advisor Condoleezza Rice, Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld and Secretary of State Colin Powell, as well as CIA Director George Tenet and Attorney General John Ashcroft.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s clear however that they knew that they were breaking the law:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 153);\">Then-Attorney General Ashcroft was troubled by the discussions. He agreed with the general policy decision to allow aggressive tactics and had repeatedly advised that they were legal. But he argued that senior White House advisers should not be involved in the grim details of interrogations, sources said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 153);\">According to a top official, Ashcroft asked aloud after one meeting: &#8220;Why are we talking about this in the White House?
