{"id":197017,"date":"2008-03-07T17:49:00","date_gmt":"2008-03-07T22:49:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2008\/03\/07\/another-argument-for-abolishing-the-airforce\/"},"modified":"2008-03-07T17:49:00","modified_gmt":"2008-03-07T22:49:00","slug":"another-argument-for-abolishing-the-airforce","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2008\/03\/07\/another-argument-for-abolishing-the-airforce\/","title":{"rendered":"Another Argument for Abolishing the Airforce"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I really am getting sick and tired of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.defencetalk.com\/news\/publish\/airforce\/Replace_Aging_Aircraft_or_Risk_Irrelevancy_General_Says100015247.php\">machinations of the fighter pilot Mafia<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Yes, General Bruce Carleson, who has <a href=\"http:\/\/40yrs.blogspot.com\/2008\/02\/fighter-dispute-hits-stratosphere-los.html\">raised insubordination to an art form<\/a>, is saying that, &#8220;Air Force officials must develop and buy new aircraft or risk the service becoming irrelevant&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>In any likely conflict for the next 20 or so years, we are looking at a few weeks of the &#8220;kinetic&#8221; phase, followed by months or years of peacekeeping, where it does not matter if you are flying an F-16, F-22, or for that matter, a WWII era piston engined A-1 SPAD.<\/p>\n<p>You are bombing and rocketing insurgents from a position of absolute air supremacy.<\/p>\n<p>The Air Force as a combat service is largely irrelevant.  What might be important is airlift, and there was just a 30+ billion award made on that a 2 weeks ago.<\/p>\n<p>To the degree that you might need to exert &#8220;dominance&#8221; if challenged by a real air threat, the critical issue will be situational awareness and communications, which can be handled through system upgrades.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I really am getting sick and tired of the machinations of the fighter pilot Mafia.
