{"id":197565,"date":"2008-01-25T00:07:00","date_gmt":"2008-01-25T05:07:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2008\/01\/25\/f-16in-to-get-supercruise\/"},"modified":"2008-01-25T00:07:00","modified_gmt":"2008-01-25T05:07:00","slug":"f-16in-to-get-supercruise","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2008\/01\/25\/f-16in-to-get-supercruise\/","title":{"rendered":"F-16IN to Get Supercruise"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I have no clue as to the reliability of the source, but we have a report that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.expressindia.com\/latest-news\/F-16-gets-super-cruise-capability\/262072\/\">Lockheed Martin will be offering the F-16 with a supercruise capability<\/a> to India for it&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/40yrs.blogspot.com\/2007\/08\/india-launches-contest-for-126-new.html\">massive mid size fighter purchase<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>I would assume that this would involve a growth version of either the F-100 or F-110 engines, probably the former, as it is lighter, and possibly some aerodynamic tweaks.<\/p>\n<p>I also know that a clean F-15 exhibited low supercruise (below Mach 1.2) nearly a decade ago in a clean (no external stores) configuration.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m a little dubious of the report, there are a number of errors in the article, it states that the F-35 supercruises, and implies that the Typhoon does not.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, the F-16&#8217;s wing configuration tends to be draggy in the transonic and supersonic regime, and for <span style=\"font-weight:bold;\">meanigful<\/span> supercruise, this ability would have to be exhibited while carrying at least 4 air-to-air missles, 2 on the wing tips, and two under the wings.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I have no clue as to the reliability of the source, but we have a report that Lockheed Martin will be offering the F-16 with a supercruise capability to India for it&#8217;s massive mid size fighter purchase.
