{"id":197695,"date":"2008-01-17T06:02:00","date_gmt":"2008-01-17T11:02:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2008\/01\/17\/new-cia-tape-coverup\/"},"modified":"2008-01-17T06:02:00","modified_gmt":"2008-01-17T11:02:00","slug":"new-cia-tape-coverup","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2008\/01\/17\/new-cia-tape-coverup\/","title":{"rendered":"New CIA Tape Coverup"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Washington Post has a farily good rundown on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/content\/article\/2008\/01\/15\/AR2008011504090.html\">the CIA tape destruction<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>I think that it&#8217;s increasingly evident that this was intended to avoid congressional and criminal scrutiny.<\/p>\n<p>I think that it&#8217;s also very likely that some tapes were missed, and they will find their way into investigators hands, where there may be criminal issues.<\/p>\n<p>I understand that the torturers were being &#8220;good Germans&#8221;, but that is no defense.<\/p>\n<p>I further understand that there will be no small number of people who will demagogue this issue for political gain, making any prosecution near-impossible.<\/p>\n<p>This is why I support the US signing onto the International Criminal Court (ICC) in the Hague.<\/p>\n<p>Our politics, and judiciary, have been so poisoned that we are unable to pursue justice in such cases.<\/p>\n<p>FWIW, prosecuting torture is not about our victims, though doubtless some were innocents tortured by mistake, but about who <span style=\"font-weight:bold;\">we<\/span> are.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Washington Post has a farily good rundown on the CIA tape destruction.
