{"id":197746,"date":"2008-01-15T00:15:00","date_gmt":"2008-01-15T05:15:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2008\/01\/15\/the-racial-aspect-to-the-campaign\/"},"modified":"2008-01-15T00:15:00","modified_gmt":"2008-01-15T05:15:00","slug":"the-racial-aspect-to-the-campaign","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2008\/01\/15\/the-racial-aspect-to-the-campaign\/","title":{"rendered":"The Racial Aspect to the Campaign"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The dynamic of the back and forth between Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama is interesting, and I think that Hillary had the better of the exchange, which, according to sources in both campaigns is now <a href=\"http:\/\/www.guardian.co.uk\/uselections08\/hillaryclinton\/story\/0,,2241051,00.html\">officially over<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Obama&#8217;s campaign is designed around a goal, to prevent the voting public from thinking of him as an angry black man who cries &#8220;wolf&#8221; about racism.<\/p>\n<p>As <a href=\"http:\/\/www.prospect.org\/csnc\/blogs\/ezraklein_archive?month=01&amp;year=2008&amp;base_name=race_and_the_campaign#103758\">Ezra Klein<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.americablog.com\/2008\/01\/draft-difference-between-clinton-and.html\"> John Aravosis<\/a> have said, this exchange undercuts Obama&#8217;s primary message, that he is a new kind of politician who can bring people together, because people are hearing what they see as the same old tired litany (it&#8217;s not really tired, because we are a bigoted society) of accusations of racism.<\/p>\n<p>It also gives Charlie Rangel, whose civil rights cred is unassailable, <a href=\"http:\/\/politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com\/2008\/01\/15\/major-clinton-supporter-calls-obama-absolutely-stupid\/\">an opportunity to call Obama&#8217;s comments stupid<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>BTW, if these little digs are causing a hiccup in Obama&#8217;s campaign, just wait and see what would happen if he gets the nomination.<\/p>\n<p>Republicans will take those accusations of racism as a badge of honor, and they will, as they have in the past, run a campaign of racist code words.<\/p>\n<p>I fear that Obama would be dead meat in the general.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The dynamic of the back and forth between Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama is interesting, and I think that Hillary had the better of the exchange, which, according to sources in both campaigns is now officially over.
