{"id":197794,"date":"2008-01-10T20:03:00","date_gmt":"2008-01-11T01:03:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2008\/01\/10\/new-ultra-capacitor-technology\/"},"modified":"2008-01-10T20:03:00","modified_gmt":"2008-01-11T01:03:00","slug":"new-ultra-capacitor-technology","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2008\/01\/10\/new-ultra-capacitor-technology\/","title":{"rendered":"New Ultra Capacitor Technology"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I read a report about <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aviationweek.com\/aw\/blogs\/defense\/index.jsp?plckController=Blog&amp;plckScript=blogScript&amp;plckElementId=blogDest&amp;plckBlogPage=BlogViewPost&amp;plckPostId=Blog%3A27ec4a53-dcc8-42d0-bd3a-01329aef79a7Post%3A78ee624b-0ec6-4c35-a93d-e468e25f924e\">Lockheed-Martin signing a contract with a company called EEstore to get exclusive rights to their ultra-capacitor technology in defense and homeland security applications<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve done a bit of looking around, there is <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/EEstor\">a Wiki Page<\/a>, and if it does 1\/10 of what they say it does, it&#8217;s impressive tech.<\/p>\n<p>The advantages of Capacitors over batteries are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Fast Charging<\/li>\n<li>Fast Discharging<\/li>\n<li>Basically never wear out.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The disadvantages are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>They can lose their stored energy over time, though this can be a long time, as anyone who has been knocked on their ass after opening up a junkyard TV can attest. (This tech is supposed to  have self-discharge rate of 0.1% per month)<\/li>\n<li>Low power density.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This technology looks very impressive:<\/p>\n<blockquote style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 153);\"><p>These units use barium titanate coated with aluminum oxide and glass to achieve a level of capacitance claimed to be much higher than what is currently available in the market. The claimed energy density is 1.0 MJ\/kg (existing commercial supercapacitors typically have an energy density of the order of 0.01 MJ\/kg and a lithium ion battery has an energy density of 0.54\u20130.72 MJ\/kg).<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Maxwell technology has ultracapacitors on the market, and their website has peformance of 3.29 Wh\/kg, or about .01MJ\/KG.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I read a report about Lockheed-Martin signing a contract with a company called EEstore to get exclusive rights to their ultra-capacitor technology in defense and homeland security applications.
