{"id":198267,"date":"2007-11-21T17:56:00","date_gmt":"2007-11-21T22:56:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2007\/11\/21\/georgias-sex-offender-housing-laws-overturned\/"},"modified":"2007-11-21T17:56:00","modified_gmt":"2007-11-21T22:56:00","slug":"georgias-sex-offender-housing-laws-overturned","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2007\/11\/21\/georgias-sex-offender-housing-laws-overturned\/","title":{"rendered":"Georgia&#8217;s Sex Offender Housing Laws Overturned"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This law basically amounted to exile from the state, as it prohibited &#8220;registered sex offenders from living within 1,000 feet of schools, churches and other areas where children congregate&#8221;, and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2007\/US\/law\/11\/21\/ga.sex.offenders.ap\/index.html\">Georgia supreme court has ruled it unconstitutional<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>There were a number of problems with the law:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>It applied to all sex offenders, so people who were no threat to children, like indecent exposure, public sex or lewdness (like Larry Craig), etc. were covered.<\/li>\n<li>It covered 150,000 school bus stops in the state, making it&#8217;s coverage too broad.<\/li>\n<li>As the court noted, offenders obeying the law, &#8220;face the possibility of being repeatedly uprooted and forced to abandon homes.&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Honestly, it&#8217;s not like pedophiles can&#8217;t drive.
