{"id":198323,"date":"2007-11-16T17:40:00","date_gmt":"2007-11-16T22:40:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2007\/11\/16\/krugman-nails-fuzzy-and-dangerous-thinking-by-obama\/"},"modified":"2007-11-16T17:40:00","modified_gmt":"2007-11-16T22:40:00","slug":"krugman-nails-fuzzy-and-dangerous-thinking-by-obama","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2007\/11\/16\/krugman-nails-fuzzy-and-dangerous-thinking-by-obama\/","title":{"rendered":"Krugman Nails Fuzzy and Dangerous Thinking by Obama"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Barak Obama has chosen to attack Hillary Clinton on inaction on what he calls &#8220;the social security crisis&#8221;.  <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">He does not get it<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>While people have some legitimate concerns about Social Security in the (<span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">very<\/span>) distant future, the problem facing the US is that health care is eating us up.<\/p>\n<p>What&#8217;s more, not only do the vast majority of Americans find the Republican meme of a &#8220;Social Security Crisis&#8221; to be pathetic and stupid Republican double talk, so does an overwhelming majority of the <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\"><span style=\"font-variant: small-caps;\">Republicans<\/span><\/span> out there.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, the only people who are selling the crisis meme about social security besides corrup partisan Republican hacks like Grover Norquist and Bush and His Evil Minions<sup>\u2122<\/sup> are the <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\"><span style=\"font-variant: small-caps;\">Very Serious People<\/span><\/span> inside the beltway, the Fred Hyatts, the Charles Krauthammers, the Bob Novaks, etc.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">The very serious people in the beltway are wrong about EVERYTHING<\/span>, and he seems determined to please him.<\/p>\n<p>When Krugman titles today&#8217;s OP\/ED, &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2007\/11\/16\/opinion\/16krugman.html?n=Top\/Opinion\/Editorials%20and%20Op-Ed\/Op-Ed\/Columnists\/Paul%20Krugman\">Played for a Sucker<\/a>, he is more right than you can possibly imagine.<\/p>\n<p>The American people <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">don&#8217;t care<\/span> about bipartisanship. <span style=\"font-style: italic;\"> They want a government that works for them.<\/span>  They do not care how it is accomplished, but they want a rising standard of living, and to stop living in fear and uncertainty that the next illness can wipe them out, and Barak Obama, like the rest of the <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\"><span style=\"font-variant: small-caps;\">Very Serious People<\/span><\/span> inside the beltway, don&#8217;t care about that.<\/p>\n<p>All <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">they<\/span> care about is that they can go to each other&#8217;s cocktail parties and have a nice time.  They do not care about the government working for them.<\/p>\n<p>To quote the future Nobel prize winner in economics:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>I don\u2019t believe Mr. Obama is a closet privatizer. He is, however, someone who keeps insisting that he can transcend the partisanship of our times \u2014 and in this case, that turned him into a sucker.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Obama wanted a way to distinguish himself from Hillary Clinton \u2014 and for Mr. Obama, who has said that the reason \u201cwe can\u2019t tackle the big problems that demand solutions\u201d is that \u201cpolitics has become so bitter and partisan,\u201d joining in the attack on Senator Clinton\u2019s Social Security position must have seemed like a golden opportunity to sound forceful yet bipartisan.<\/p>\n<p>But Social Security isn\u2019t a big problem that demands a solution; it\u2019s a small problem, way down the list of major issues facing America, that has nonetheless become an obsession of Beltway insiders. And on Social Security, as on many other issues, what Washington means by bipartisanship is mainly that everyone should come together to give conservatives what they want. <\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This position on Social Security, much like his <a href=\"http:\/\/40yrs.blogspot.com\/2007\/10\/sorry-obama-is-engaging-in-dog-whistle.html\">despicable use of dog whistle anti-gay bigotry in his South Carolina campaign<\/a>, is something that the <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\"><span style=\"font-variant: small-caps;\">Very Serious People<\/span><\/span> inside the beltway appreciate.  They think that the rest of us are stupid.
