{"id":198611,"date":"2007-10-24T22:04:00","date_gmt":"2007-10-25T03:04:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2007\/10\/24\/what-republican-government-gets-you\/"},"modified":"2007-10-24T22:04:00","modified_gmt":"2007-10-25T03:04:00","slug":"what-republican-government-gets-you","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2007\/10\/24\/what-republican-government-gets-you\/","title":{"rendered":"What Republican Government Gets You"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Only, unlike New Orleans, they are not drowning the city in a bathtub, they are burining it in a furnace.<\/p>\n<p>The LA Times has a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/news\/columnists\/la-me-lopez24oct24,1,5880052.column?coll=la-news-columns\">fascinating interview with the former Fire Chief of San Diego<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Some Tidbits:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>He quit as fire chief because they did not quitting over staffing and resource issues, what the author of the article calls, &#8220;San Diego&#8217;s long, [Republican] proud culture of skimping on services to keep taxes low&#8221;.<\/li>\n<li>San Diego has 975 firefighters for 330 square miles and 1.3 million residents, while San Francisco 1,600 firefighters for 60 square miles and 850,000 people.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 153);\"><p>  As UC San Diego professor Steve Erie puts it:<\/p>\n<p> &#8220;It&#8217;s paradise plundered,&#8221; which happens to be the title of a book he&#8217;s finishing &#8220;about how developers run this town.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Erie says that &#8220;developers own most of the city councils. In Poway, in Escondido, what they do is put homeowners in harm&#8217;s way. They&#8217;re able to control zoning processes, and they&#8217;re frequently behind initiatives that say no new taxes, no new fire services. It&#8217;s insanity.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>It&#8217;s not insanity.
