{"id":198740,"date":"2007-10-14T16:40:00","date_gmt":"2007-10-14T21:40:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2007\/10\/14\/the-fight-over-white-space\/"},"modified":"2007-10-14T16:40:00","modified_gmt":"2007-10-14T21:40:00","slug":"the-fight-over-white-space","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2007\/10\/14\/the-fight-over-white-space\/","title":{"rendered":"The Fight Over White Space"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Microsoft and Google, on the same side for once, are in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theregister.co.uk\/2007\/10\/13\/big_four_tv_networks_attack_google_microsoft_wireless_proposal\/\">in a tussle with commercial TV stations over &#8220;white space&#8221;<\/a>, the unused channels in broadcast TV.<\/p>\n<p>Basically, Microsoft sent a prototype to the FCC which was supposed to automatically detect white space, and use the spectrum for (very) high speed connectivity, but it failed because Microsoft <span style=\"font-weight:bold;\">never<\/span> gets anything right the first time.<\/p>\n<p>Broadcaster&#8217;s heads are exploding over this proposal, with claims of severe interference, technical problems, and that it will make your daughter date a biker.<\/p>\n<p>While part of this is no doubt a result of the proprietary feelings that broadcasters have regarding &#8220;their&#8221; (it belongs to all of us) spectrum, I think that another part is that they do not want to have a competing use.<\/p>\n<p>If there is a competing use, at some point regulators might give priority to that use, as opposed to broadcasting reruns of &#8220;my mother the car&#8221;.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Microsoft and Google, on the same side for once, are in in a tussle with commercial TV stations over &#8220;white space&#8221;, the unused channels in broadcast TV.
