{"id":199130,"date":"2007-09-04T17:34:00","date_gmt":"2007-09-04T22:34:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2007\/09\/04\/bush-and-his-evil-minions-lust-for-another-terror-attack\/"},"modified":"2007-09-04T17:34:00","modified_gmt":"2007-09-04T22:34:00","slug":"bush-and-his-evil-minions-lust-for-another-terror-attack","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2007\/09\/04\/bush-and-his-evil-minions-lust-for-another-terror-attack\/","title":{"rendered":"Bush and His Evil Minions\u2122 Lust for Another Terror Attack"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It used to be that reading the New York Times was not like reading HP Lovecraft.<\/p>\n<p>Now, they make the man who is arguably the greatest horror writer of the 20th century (at least the first half) look like a piker, as in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2007\/09\/09\/magazine\/09rosen.html?ex=1347076800&amp;en=426a5f520b57279a&amp;ei=5090&amp;partner=rssuserland&amp;emc=rss\">this New York Times magazine article<\/a>.  You should read it for yourself, but here are the high (low?) points in this article about former Bush administration official and major right wing legal scholar Jack Goldsmith, and his new book <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">The Terror Presidency<\/span>.:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>That the administration <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">unecessarily<\/span> took a broad &#8220;go it alone&#8221; view toward executive power.<\/li>\n<li>Legal decisions were not made at DoJ, but by the White House Council (Gonzalez), and the general counsel of the Defense Department.<\/li>\n<li>These policies, and the policy making process were so out of line that it honked off John Ashcroft.<\/li>\n<li>In response to a fairly straightforward legal opinion, Goldsmith&#8217;s assisistant said, &#8220;They\u2019re going to be really mad. They\u2019re not going to understand our decision. <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\"><span style=\"font-variant: small-caps;\">They\u2019ve never been told no<\/span><\/span>.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>In response to this decision, David Addington, then Vice President Cheney\u2019s legal adviser and  now his chief of staff &#8220;<span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">You cannot question his decision<\/span>&#8220;.<\/li>\n<li>Addington later confronted him and said, &#8220;If you rule that waythe blood of the hundred thousand people who die in the next attack will be on <span>your <\/span>hands.&#8221; (Have I mentioned that these people are really paranoid nuts?)<\/li>\n<li>He felt compelled to resign immediately after issuing a more restrictive interrogation policy, &#8220;<span style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 153);\">So he made a strategic decision: on the same day that he withdrew the opinion, he submitted his resignation, effectively forcing the administration to choose between accepting his decision and letting him leave quietly, or rejecting it and turning his resignation into a big news story<\/span>.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>Goldsmith recalls that Addington (and Addington does not fart without getting Cheney&#8217;s approval) saying, &#8220;<span style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 153); font-weight: bold;\"><span style=\"font-variant: small-caps;\">We\u2019re one bomb away from getting rid of that obnoxious [FISA] court<\/span><\/span>&#8220;.  They really want another attack.<\/li>\n<li>That the badgering of Ashcroft in the hospital was so bad that his wife <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">stuck her tongue at them<\/span>.
