{"id":199294,"date":"2007-08-15T05:02:00","date_gmt":"2007-08-15T10:02:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2007\/08\/15\/more-on-the-delusional-usaf-view-of-airpower-in-counterinsurgency\/"},"modified":"2007-08-15T05:02:00","modified_gmt":"2007-08-15T10:02:00","slug":"more-on-the-delusional-usaf-view-of-airpower-in-counterinsurgency","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2007\/08\/15\/more-on-the-delusional-usaf-view-of-airpower-in-counterinsurgency\/","title":{"rendered":"More on the Delusional USAF View of Airpower in Counterinsurgency."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This time from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.afa.org\/magazine\/march2007\/0307watch.asp\">Air Force Magazine<\/a>, the organ of the Air Forces Association, see my <a href=\"http:\/\/40yrs.blogspot.com\/2007\/08\/this-man-is-completely-insane.html\">post last night on the batsh%$ insane Air Force two star<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Petraeus basically argues that aggressive use of Air Force capabilities, except in a Tet Offensive situation, is actually counter productive.<\/p>\n<p>Given the fact that the US air strike happy doctrine has led the Brits to demand that the US cease operations in their area (<a href=\"http:\/\/40yrs.blogspot.com\/2007\/08\/brits-to-us-sod-off-in-afghanistan.html\">blogged here<\/a>), it&#8217;s clear that Petraeus is right, &#8220;However, air assets should be at the disposal of the ground commander, according to the new doctrine manual.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Needless to say, the USAF hates this with a passion.  Not only does this belittle them, it also makes most of their newer toys unnecessary:<\/p>\n<blockquote style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 153);\"><p>Maj. Gen. Allen G. Peck, commander of the Air Force Doctrine Center at Maxwell AFB, Ala., said he had seen the doctrine penned by Petraeus and Amos, and said that it reflected \u201ca very two-dimensional view of how to fight a counterinsurgency.\u201d If airmen had written it, it would be \u201cdifferent,\u201d Peck observed.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>He&#8217;s also completely wrong.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s like allowing a <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">pyromaniac<\/span> to advise on fighting house fires.<\/p>\n<blockquote style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 153);\"><p>Maj.
