{"id":199436,"date":"2007-07-30T05:52:00","date_gmt":"2007-07-30T10:52:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2007\/07\/30\/who-hasnt-been-tempted-to-do-this\/"},"modified":"2007-07-30T05:52:00","modified_gmt":"2007-07-30T10:52:00","slug":"who-hasnt-been-tempted-to-do-this","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2007\/07\/30\/who-hasnt-been-tempted-to-do-this\/","title":{"rendered":"Who Hasn&#8217;t Been Tempted to Do This?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It appears that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theregister.co.uk\/2007\/07\/26\/nasa_lost_stuff\/\">NASA has lost nearly 100 million of taxpayer purchased equipment in the past decade<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It appears that there are few controls in place for about $35 billion of assets.<\/p>\n<p>That being said, the story of the lost laptop is my favorite:<\/p>\n<blockquote style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 153);\"><p>It cites one employee who excused himself (or herself) of losing a laptop worth $4,000 with the explanation that the machine had burned up in the atmosphere.<\/p>\n<p>The lost equipment report included the following explanation: &#8220;This computer, although assigned to me, was being used on board the International Space Station. I was informed that it was tossed overboard to be burned up in the atmosphere when it failed.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>That sure as hell beats, &#8220;the dog ate my homework&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>You know, if I were in orbit, that&#8217;s what I&#8217;d do to a computer that was #$%%ing up badly.
