{"id":200181,"date":"2021-06-16T18:31:00","date_gmt":"2021-06-16T23:31:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2021\/06\/16\/why-am-i-not-surprised-5\/"},"modified":"2021-06-16T18:31:00","modified_gmt":"2021-06-16T23:31:00","slug":"why-am-i-not-surprised-5","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2021\/06\/16\/why-am-i-not-surprised-5\/","title":{"rendered":"Why Am I Not Surprised?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A leaked audio of a Senator Joe Manchin (DINO-WV) call with rich donors has revealed, among other things, that <a href=\"https:\/\/theintercept.com\/2021\/06\/16\/joe-manchin-leaked-billionaire-donors-no-labels\/\">he asked donors at the group, &#8220;No Labels,&#8221; to bribe fellow Senator Roy Blunt<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Joe Manchin is not just a conservative Democrat, he is a disloyal one, and given that a recording of his call was leaked, one who who has people close to him looking to give him a well deserved shiv between his shoulder blades:<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #2b00fe;\"><span>West Virginia Sen. Joe Manchin, in a private call on Monday with a group of major donors, provided a revealing look at his political approach to some of the thorniest issues confronting lawmakers.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #2b00fe;\"><span>The remarks were given on a Zoom teleconference session that was obtained by The Intercept.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #2b00fe;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #2b00fe;\"><span>The meeting was hosted by the group No Labels, a big money operation co-founded by former Sen. Joe Lieberman that <a href=\"https:\/\/theintercept.com\/2018\/12\/04\/no-labels-funding-private-equity\/\">funnels high-net-worth donor money<\/a> to conservative Democrats and moderate Republicans. Among the  gathering\u2019s newsworthy revelations: Manchin described an openness to  filibuster reform at odds with his most recent position that will buoy  some Democrats\u2019 hopes for enacting their agenda.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #2b00fe;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #2b00fe;\">\u2026\u2026\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #2b00fe;\">The wide-ranging conversation went into depth on the fate of the filibuster, infrastructure negotiations, and the failed effort to create a bipartisan commission to explore the January 6 storming of the U.S. Capitol, and offers a frank glimpse into the thinking of the conservative Democrat who holds the party\u2019s fate in his hands.<\/p>\n<p>Manchin told the assembled donors that he needed help flipping a handful of Republicans from no to yes on the January 6 commission in order to strip the \u201cfar left\u201d of their best argument against the filibuster. The filibuster is a critical priority for the donors on the call, as it bottles up progressive legislation that would hit their bottom lines.&nbsp;<\/span> <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>OK, this is not an invalid comment, though a US Senator asking high dollar donors to act as his enforcers is pretty damn skeevy.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #2b00fe;\">\u2026\u2026\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #2b00fe;\">When it came to Sen. Roy Blunt, a moderate Missouri Republican who voted no on the commission, Manchin offered a creative solution. \u201cRoy Blunt is a great, just a good friend of mine, a great guy,\u201d Manchin said. \u201cRoy is retiring. If some of you all who might be working with Roy in his next life could tell him, that\u2019d be nice and it\u2019d help our country. That would be very good to get him to change his vote. And we\u2019re going to have another vote on this thing.
