{"id":200218,"date":"2021-06-06T19:03:00","date_gmt":"2021-06-07T00:03:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2021\/06\/06\/the-solution-is\/"},"modified":"2021-06-06T19:03:00","modified_gmt":"2021-06-07T00:03:00","slug":"the-solution-is","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2021\/06\/06\/the-solution-is\/","title":{"rendered":"The Solution Is"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It appears that the wild swings in heavily shorted stocks, most recently for AMC movie theaters, is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2021-06-05\/amc-drama-is-exposing-risks-in-11-trillion-world-of-indexing\">causing instabilities in the market that threaten the stability of index funds<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The solution to this is fairly straightforward, first and most importantly, enact a transaction tax for all financial transfers to increase the friction, and hence reduce the speculation.<\/p>\n<p>It might also be a good idea to ban Payment for Flow Order, which is a Bernie Madoff inspired &#8220;Innovation&#8221; which is little more than an excuse for front running, where a broker executes <i>their<\/i> trades before those of their customers for their own <i>personal<\/i> profit.<\/p>\n<p>Speculation is a <i>cost<\/i> we pay for investment, an <i>evil<\/i> that we tolerate in order to encourage <i>investment<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>A tax of between 10 and 50 basis points (\u2152% \u2014 \u00bd%) tax per transaction.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Even if it does not generate as much revenue as its supporters predict, it will produce a very real public good:<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #2b00fe;\">Index funds are supposed to cut out the human-driven craziness that periodically infects markets, but the recent meme-stock fever proved the $11 trillion industry is far from immune.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2021-06-03\/amc-looks-less-like-a-cult-stock-and-more-like-an-actual-cult\">remarkable surge<\/a> in shares of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/quote\/AMC:US\">AMC Entertainment Holdings Inc.<\/a> and a handful of other stocks is showing up in multiple exchange-traded funds, skewing portfolios, altering risk profiles and exerting outsized influence on prices. <\/p>\n<p>Take the $68 billion iShares Russell 2000 ETF (ticker <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/quote\/IWM:US\">IWM<\/a>). In the past week through Thursday, AMC powered 70% of the product\u2019s advance. The stock was responsible for less than a 10th of the fund\u2019s return in the previous week. <\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a timely reminder that even diversified funds on autopilot remain subject to the whims and eccentricities that frequently lash markets out of nowhere.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #2b00fe;\">\u2026\u2026\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #2b00fe;\">\u201cFor index investing, the appeal is that human decision-making, human emotions are taken out of it,\u201d said Tom Essaye, a former Merrill Lynch trader who founded \u201cthe Sevens Report\u201d newsletter. \u201cThat works all well and good until a stock that is supposed to be 50 basis points of the fund now becomes 6%.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>This is going to destroy us all.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It appears that the wild swings in heavily shorted stocks, most recently for AMC movie theaters, is causing instabilities in the market that threaten the stability of index funds.
