{"id":200224,"date":"2021-06-04T20:02:00","date_gmt":"2021-06-05T01:02:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2021\/06\/04\/ill-believe-it-when-i-see-it-4\/"},"modified":"2021-06-04T20:02:00","modified_gmt":"2021-06-05T01:02:00","slug":"ill-believe-it-when-i-see-it-4","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2021\/06\/04\/ill-believe-it-when-i-see-it-4\/","title":{"rendered":"I&#8217;ll Believe It When I See It"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i.imgur.com\/HXccZdt.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i.imgur.com\/HXccZdt.jpg\" style=\"cursor: pointer; float: right; margin: 0px 0px 10px 10px;\" width=\"350\" \/><\/a>United Airlines has put in an order for <a href=\"https:\/\/aviationweek.com\/aerospace\/aircraft-propulsion\/united-airlines-overture-order-marks-major-boost-boom\">Boom Supersonic\u2019s Overture airliner<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>There has never been a meaningful Supersonic Transport (SST) that has entered service without billions in public subsidies, so I do not expect this aircraft to see service.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The financial numbers are just not there, as shown by the <a href=\"https:\/\/aviationweek.com\/business-aviation\/aerion-ceasing-operations-as2-jet-company-says\">recent demise of the Aerion supersonic business jet<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>I don&#8217;t know why United put in an order, but I don&#8217;t ever expect them to actually fly the aircraft:<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #2b00fe;\">More than half a century after placing options for the European-made Concorde, United Airlines is once again banking on the commercial allure of speed by becoming the first operator to order its spiritual successor\u2014Boom Supersonic\u2019s Overture.<br \/><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>United never flew the Concorde. <\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #2b00fe;\">The startling deal, which covers orders for 15 aircraft with options on a further 35, is a key milestone toward the revival of faster-than-sound commercial transport and a major boost for the Denver-based startup aircraft manufacturer.<\/p>\n<p>\u2026\u2026\u2026<\/p>\n<p>  The United deal envisages introduction of the first civil supersonic services on transatlantic and Pacific routes by 2029. The Overture will be designed to cruise at Mach 1.7 <span style=\"color: black;\">[Down from earlier goal of Mach 2.2]<\/span> and carry up to 88 passengers on routes up to 4,250 nm using 100% sustainable aviation fuel (SAF).<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Note that, much like the Concorde, this jet cannot operate at supersonic speeds over land, and even if it uses &#8220;Sustainable&#8221; fuel, a subsonic airliner will carry more 2 to 3 times people on a gallon of fuel. <\/p>\n<p>The numbers just don&#8217;t add up.<\/p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>United Airlines has put in an order for Boom Supersonic\u2019s Overture airliner.
