Legally, it&#8217;s called   a crime against humanity: <\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>    <span style=\"color: #2b00fe;\">The Joseph Biden administration has named       <a href=\"https:\/\/foreignpolicy.com\/2021\/03\/05\/biden-middle-east-team-pentagon-state-department-nsc\/\">Richard Nephew<\/a>      as its deputy Iran envoy. As the former principal deputy coordinator of       sanctions policy for Barack Obama\u2019s State Department, Nephew took personal       credit for depriving Iranians of food, sabotaging their automobile       industry, and driving up unemployment rates.<\/span>  <\/p>\n<p>    <span style=\"color: #2b00fe;\">Nephew has described the destruction of Iran\u2019s economy as \u201ca tremendous       success,\u201d and lamented during a visit to Russia that food was still       plentiful in the country\u2019s capital despite mounting US sanctions.<\/span>  <\/p>\n<p>    <span style=\"color: #2b00fe;\">Nephew\u2019s appointment to a senior diplomatic post suggests that rather       than immediately returning to the JCPOA nuclear deal, the Biden       administration will finesse sanctions illegally imposed by Trump to       pressure Iran into an onerous, reworked agreement that Tehran is unlikely       to join.     <\/span>  <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>  Doubling down on bad policy and ignoring agreements that have been signed   because \u2026\u2026\u2026 American Exceptionalism.&nbsp; Great policy there. <\/p>\n<p>You see, he wrote a book:<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #2b00fe;\">\u2026\u2026\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<p>    <span style=\"color: #2b00fe;\">Entitled \u201cT<i>he Art of Sanctions: A View From The Field<\/i>,\u201d the book\u2019s       cover image features two Caucasian hands drawing a rope for a noose,       presumably to strangle some insufficiently pliant Global South government.       Its contents read like a list of criminal confessions, detailing in       chillingly clinical terms how the sanctions Nephew conceived from inside       an air-conditioned office in Washington immiserated average Iranians.<\/p>\n<p>With       his candor, Nephew has shattered the official US rhetoric about \u201ctargeted       sanctions\u201d that exclusively punish \u201cbad actors\u201d and their business cronies       while leaving civilian populations unharmed.<\/span>  <\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #2b00fe;\">\u2026\u2026\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<p>    <span style=\"color: #2b00fe;\">Nephew also patted himself on the back for tripling the price of chicken       \u201cduring important Iranian holiday periods,\u201d thereby \u201ccontribut[ing] to       more popular frustration in one bank shot than years of financial       restrictions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Next, he boasted of more sanctions targeting       civilians to prevent Iranians from obtaining the assistance they needed to       repair their cars. \u201cIran\u2019s manufacturing jobs and export revenue were the       targets of this sanction,\u201d Nephew wrote.<\/span>  <\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #2b00fe;\">\u2026\u2026\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<p>    <span style=\"color: #2b00fe;\"><\/p>\n<p>In response to online criticism, Nephew has claimed that \u201cthe       main target\u201d of the sanctions regime he designed was \u201cthe oligarchs.\u201d But       his book on \u201cThe Art of Sanctions\u201d tells another story.<\/p>\n<p>Nephew       fondly recalls how he structured sanctions to sabotage Iranian economic       reforms that would have improved the purchasing power of average people.       The Obama administration destroyed the economic prospects of Iran\u2019s       working-class majority while ensuring that \u201conly the wealthy or those in       positions of power could take advantage of Iran\u2019s continued       connectedness,\u201d he wrote. As \u201cstories began to emerge from Iran of       intensified income inequality and inflation,\u201d Nephew pronounced another       success.<\/span>  <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>  Rather unsurprisingly, the government of Venezuela has submitted Nephew&#8217;s   books and articles as evidence of war crimes to the ICC <\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">    Yesterday, we officially submitted before the International Criminal Court     the book &#8220;The Art of Sanctions&#8221; and the article &#8220;Evaluating the Trump     Administration\u2019s Approach to Sanctions: Venezuela&#8221;, both by     <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RichardMNephew?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@RichardMNephew<\/a>, advisor to Obama and Biden for the imposition of sanctions     <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/lW9d3V4bRW\">pic.twitter.com\/lW9d3V4bRW<\/a>  <\/p>\n<p>  \u2014 Jorge Arreaza M (@jaarreaza)   <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/jaarreaza\/status\/1394771360463966210?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">May 18, 2021<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>  Richard Nephew&#8217;s books and articles are also evidence that he is too stupid,   and too criminal, to hold a security clearance, much less hold a senior   position in the any Presidential administration. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Biden Administration has announced that it will be appointing Richard Nephew as assistant envoy to Iran.
