{"id":200331,"date":"2021-05-08T18:55:00","date_gmt":"2021-05-08T23:55:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2021\/05\/08\/of-course-they-are-blaming-corbyn\/"},"modified":"2021-05-08T18:55:00","modified_gmt":"2021-05-08T23:55:00","slug":"of-course-they-are-blaming-corbyn","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2021\/05\/08\/of-course-they-are-blaming-corbyn\/","title":{"rendered":"Of Course they Are Blaming Corbyn"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>There were by-elections in the UK yesterday, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/politics\/2021\/may\/07\/labour-pledges-further-change-as-party-faces-grim-electoral-outlook\">labour completely screwed the pooch<\/a>, loosing a seat that they have held since its founding 62 years ago.<\/p>\n<p>Jeremy Corbyn is being blamed, because \u2026\u2026\u2026 Blairite Labour is sees Boris Johnson and the Tories as the opposition, and people who actually support progressive policies as the enemy.<\/p>\n<p>It is not 1995.&nbsp; It&#8217;s not even 2008.<\/p>\n<p>The great recession changed things, and you are going to get more Boris Johnsons and more Donald Trumps until they stop sucking up to predatory capital as a campaign strategy:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #2b00fe;\">Keir Starmer is facing immediate pressure from the left of Labour to change course after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/politics\/2021\/may\/07\/hartlepool-byelection-result-labour-starmer-conservatives\">losing the Hartlepool byelection<\/a> and a string of council seats to the Conservatives.<\/p>\n<p>It came as Boris Johnson, visiting Hartlepool after the Conservatives took the seat for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/politics\/2021\/may\/07\/obsessed-with-the-flag-labour-recriminations-begin-in-hartlepool\">first time in its 47-year history<\/a>, said the result \u2013 which turned a Labour majority of 3,600 into a Tory win by nearly 7,000 votes, a 16-point swing \u2013 was \u201ca mandate\u201d for the government to press on.<\/p>\n<p>\u2026\u2026\u2026<\/p>\n<p>While Labour had accepted the early results were likely to be among the worst of the series of votes across England, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/uk\/scotland\">Scotland<\/a> and Wales, the immediate message from Starmer and his allies was to push for a more rapid move away from the Jeremy Corbyn era.<br \/><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Corbyn out-performed expectations in 3 of 4 elections with the party infrastructure actively sabotaging him.<\/p>\n<p>You followed that up with party purges against him and his supporters. <\/p>\n<p>If you think that the problem is that you are not moving fast enough away from Corbyn, you are delusional.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #2b00fe;\">\u2026\u2026\u2026<\/p>\n<p>Diane Abbott, who was shadow home secretary under Corbyn, tweeted: \u201cKeir Starmer must think again about his strategy.\u201d She added: \u201cCrushing defeat for Labour in Hartlepool. Not possible to blame Jeremy Corbyn for this result. Labour won the seat twice under his leadership.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Richard Burgon, the Leeds East MP who was shadow justice secretary under Corbyn, said Starmer\u2019s team \u201cneeds to urgently change direction\u201d. He <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RichardBurgon\/status\/1390550418208563202\">tweeted<\/a>: \u201cIt should start by championing the popular policies in our recent manifestos \u2013 backed by a large majority of voters.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A spokesman for Momentum, the Corbyn-allied Labour group, said: \u201cThe leadership are reacting to this disaster by promising \u2018more change\u2019 \u2013 but over the last year we\u2019ve gone backwards. It\u2019s time to change direction, not double down on a failed strategy.\u201d<br \/><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>They are going to double down on a failed strategy, because playing to win means that they lose power within the party.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>One of Tony Blair&#8217;s &#8220;innovations&#8221; for Labour was the imposition of a top-down process in selecting MPs in many seats, and if the left takes power, and has the guts to deal with members more interested in power IN the party than the power OF the party, their positions will be far less secure. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>There were by-elections in the UK yesterday, and labour completely screwed the pooch, loosing a seat that they have held since its founding 62 years ago.
