{"id":200544,"date":"2021-03-09T19:23:00","date_gmt":"2021-03-10T00:23:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2021\/03\/09\/another-cia-operation-goes-pear-shaped\/"},"modified":"2021-03-09T19:23:00","modified_gmt":"2021-03-10T00:23:00","slug":"another-cia-operation-goes-pear-shaped","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2021\/03\/09\/another-cia-operation-goes-pear-shaped\/","title":{"rendered":"Another CIA Operation Goes Pear Shaped"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A court has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2021\/mar\/08\/lula-convictions-annulled-by-brazil-judge-bolsonaro-election-2022\">overturned the patently bogus conviction of Luiz In\u00e1cio Lula da Silva<\/a>, which means that he can run for the Presidency of Brazil in the next election.<\/p>\n<p>Given that he is the most popular politician in Brazil by a lot, he is very likely to win.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The short version of the story is that the judge overseeing the trials colluded with prosecutors to convict da Silva of taking bribes to refurbish an apartment that he never lived in, and probably never owned.<\/p>\n<p>One hopes that Lula has learned his lesson, and understands that so long as they remain in positions of power, his opponents will stop at nothing to destroy him, up to, and probably including violence and assassination against him, his family and his supporters.<\/p>\n<p>They need to be turfed out, sooner rather than later:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #2b00fe;\">Brazil\u2019s former president <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/luiz-inacio-lula-da-silva\">Luiz In\u00e1cio Lula da Silva<\/a> could be set for a sensational comeback attempt after a supreme court judge annulled a series of criminal convictions against the leftist icon and restored his political rights.<\/p>\n<p>The ruling, which analysts called a political bombshell, means Lula is almost certain to challenge Brazil\u2019s incumbent president, Jair Bolsonaro, in the 2022 presidential election.<\/p>\n<p>\u2026\u2026\u2026<\/p>\n<p>Lula was president of Latin America\u2019s largest economy for two terms, between 2003 and 2011, and oversaw a historic period of commodity-fuelled growth and poverty reduction. The Workers\u2019 party (PT) politician, who is now 75, had hoped to seek a third term in 2018 but was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2018\/sep\/11\/lula-brazil-presidential-election-candidate-gives-up-race\">sidelined<\/a> after being jailed on disputed corruption charges, paving the way for Bolsonaro\u2019s landslide victory.<\/p>\n<p>Lula was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2019\/nov\/08\/lula-brazil-released-prison-supreme-court-ruling\">released from prison<\/a> in November 2019 after 580 days behind bars but remained unable to seek election after being stripped of his political rights.<br \/><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The entire &#8220;Car Wash&#8221; affair, and the ascension of Bolsonaro that followed, is yet another indication of just how toxic US meddling in Latin America has been over the past 250 years.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A court has overturned the patently bogus conviction of Luiz In\u00e1cio Lula da Silva, which means that he can run for the Presidency of Brazil in the next election.
