Like last year, I celebrated the fourth with a long-time resident of the area. He’s a cattleman (which is not the same as a farmer), on family land. They have this little grove of cedar trees tucked into a draw of land that is a brilliant spot for a picnic and celebrations.

I trade the bustle of people and fireworks for the quiet of pasture lands and a small group of people I don’t particularly know. It’s worth it.

Even if it means I have to clean cow snot off my car the next day.
