I took the plunge.

Financing is in order, the offer is sent, the counter-offer came back, and I signed a few dead trees.

Counting down to closing

Then it was a matter of choosing colors and I was done. The closing date will come at me faster than I expect, I’m sure.

I’m not looking forward to the increased cost of living.

But I am looking forward to quite a few things.

  • My MG and my Subaru will be stored inside.
  • Related to that, I can change my own oil again. I don’t really miss doing it, but I miss the satisfaction of a job done.
  • If my car sits on jacks in my garage for 3 weeks, it’s OK.
  • I can do laundry at 1 in the morning, if I desire.
  • I can cook with charcoal.
  • I’ll be able to take a long shower without running out of hot water.
  • I won’t be sharing any walls, ceilings, or floors.
  • natural gas heat and cooking.
  • Dogs are too needy for my lifestyle, but it’s nice to know that I can have one if I really want one.
  • Added July 9: If I’m sitting in my underwear and realize I left something in my car, I can fetch it without scarring the neighbors or putting on more clothes.

Is it all worth it? I honestly don’t know. I don’t tend to look at home ownership as the investment it could be. It’s a place to live. And in that regard, the conveniences of ownership come at a very high price. I can only hope it’s worth the cost.
