Note: I wrote this on December 19th, shortly after I watched Star Wars on opening weekend. I’ve waited until now to publish because I don’t want give anything away.

Star Wars vs Star Trek. I understand the debate, but not really, since I like both. And as of today, I’ve seen movies directed by JJ Abrams in both worlds. There’s a pattern developing; I hope it isn’t one that will continue.

The last Star Trek was a retelling of Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. Even if you were a dunce like me that avoided the spoilers at all cost, you realized what was going on before it happened. It made the story different. I still enjoyed the tale, but when you know what is coming, the twists don’t really help hide it.

Today, I watched Star Wars, Episode VII. It was quite fun. I loved it. But I can’t help but feel… disappointed. I loved it and I was disappointed—there’s a mixed review.

I think it was about 20 minutes in when I realized it. I’ve seen this story before. I know what happens. And sure enough. What I knew would happen, happened. The characters were different, but the role was the same. The planets changed, but the worlds didn’t.

Now fortunately for The Force Awakens, unlike Star Trek Beyond, the characters were true to themselves. And fortunately, there were new characters that give us A New Hope that episodes VIII and IX will not be a rehashing of the same old stories.
