New Jersey Pedestrian Injuries and Fatalities

In 1993, 788 people were killed in traffic crashes in New Jersey. 193, or 24% of all traffic deaths, were suffered by pedestrians. Recent disputes over traffic safety measures in Monmouth County suggest that pedestrian safety is not uniformly recognized as a transportation issue throughout the state, although many towns are paying more attention to walkers, provision of sidewalks and slowing traffic in crowded or dangerous intersections.
