New York State Budget Provides Little to New York City Transit

The fight to roll back the $1.50 fare for all New Yorkers continues in court. A federal appeals court will rule shortly in a civil rights challenge to the $1.50 fare. The suit notes that the city transit system will receive only 63% of state transit aid, even though it moves 81% of all of New York State's mass transit riders. At the same time, the MTA's suburban rail lines -- the Long Island Rail Road and Metro North -- move 6% of the state's riders, but receive 21% of state transit aid. City subway and bus riders were socked with a 20% fare increase, compared to 8-5% for the suburban rail lines.
