Who am I?

Middle-aged spinster having one heck of a good time, that's who. After gallivanting all over the world for the first 25 years of my life (Mozambique, South Korea, Japan, Texas and the USA - my father was in oil exploration) I settled in Seattle in 1977.

My main interest these days is glassblowing.  Read all about it here.

I love to dance (ballroom, folk, etc) and used to be in a historic dance performing group, the Seaside Pavilion Historic Dance Society. I then become involved with Argentine Tango, and was a dancer in Sonny Newman and Patty Leverett's Ballos Tango Dance Company. I'm currently taking a break from it, but would like to start again, so am looking for a new dance partner. Qualifications are: male, 5' 8" or over, have tango or other partner dance experience and would like to learn and perform tango, and be willing to come into Seattle for practices. This is not an ad for a romantic partner, so marital status and sexual orientation are irrelevant. If this sounds appealing, drop me an email.

I live in a cool old Craftsman bungalow, built in 1917 (no ghosts, unfortunately) and this year the plants that I actually want to see in my garden seem to be outnumbering the weeds. 3 cats (all society's rejects) call me their servant. Since my mother's passing, on January 17, 1999, my household became home to a (of all things - I wanted a greyhound!) toy poodle, and since October 9, 1999 the poodle population has doubled. The cats are still working on forgiving me.

After sitting in my garage for 4 years, my non-functioning 1952 Studebaker Champion was towed off by a nice couple from Tacoma, who have promised to bring it by for a visit when they've restored it about, oh, 10 years from now. It and my 1984 Honda have been replaced by a 1998 Acura Integra LS sedan, and I'm still adjusting to having a car that actually can accelerate while going up hill.

I'm Jewish, but never felt comfortable in any of the traditional Jewish communities. About 2 years ago, I discovered Bet Alef Meditational Synagogue and so now have a spiritual home.

How did I get here?

I started life as a poor Cobol programmer. (But I feel better now, thank you.) In 1989, shortly after starting a new job (I got to program in C, not just Cobol, even if it still was under MVS) I looked over the shoulder of a coworker, who was working on the hallowed Unix side of the group, and asked, "What's that?". "That" turned out to be Usenet. I quickly obtained an account on the Unix server, and have never looked back.

The Internet is a wondrous tool. Through it, I have made many acquaintances and more than a few good friends. I've met over 200 fascinating diverse people, from all over the world and different walks of life, whom I might never otherwise have had the opportunity to know. .

Work Stuff:

Before I discovered computers, my various jobs included archaeologist, bookstore manager, radio announcer, theater technician. In my computer life, I did finally escape from the world of MVS. For 9 years I worked on Silicon Graphics Silicon Graphics (SGI) equipment, first as a C programmer, then as a system administrator, and finally as second level support, answering questions from system administrators and advised my customers on what configurations of SGI hardware best suit their needs. Recently I realized I needed a change of pace, and now work in an Internet technologies group, administering a Usenet server and evaluating, recommending and supporting web server and browser software.
