The shaman was an elderly vixen. "You are young, and willing to learn. That is always a good step. This is the first rule: We dance on different levels...you must peer behind the truth of my words, and uncover the greater truth within."

I nodded. It seemed simple enough.

"The universe speaks to us all. But first you must learn to listen. This is the first rule."

I interrupted. "But isn't that the SECOND rule?"

She shook her head sadly. "They are all First, for you are ALWAYS beginning." She handed me the bowl. "Now drink. Close your eyes, and open your mind...and listen."

I drank. I could hear the crickets chirping. I listened to the secrets they told. I heard the death cries of stars, and the moans of the earth. And something...dark.

"The void calls us all. Some more than others. This is the first rule." I listened. I heard. I saw my death.

"And now you have seen the path you have chosen. Rise, adept, and be unafraid to take the first step. This is the first rule."

I stood, and walked towards her, and said, "They are all the first step."

She smiled.
