I live in Seattle.
This isn't news to most of you.
One of the many things I love about Seattle (aside from the 70 degree and blue skies weather I'm experiencing today, 27 July, 2007....) is the fact that the entire city is serious about their technology.
In fact, as I write this, I'm on the bus on the way to work. I have connectivity. In the seats all around me, I can see at least 5 people who also have their laptops open, banging away on keys, getting stuff done. The remainder are fiddling with cell phones, iPods, and reading. A few stare out the window.
When I clicked on the icon to set up the wireless, the bus was at the top of the list, but there was (no shit, I counted) 48 other connectivity points I could have connected to (although a good number of them were secured.)
Just now, literally while I was writing this, I was interrupted by a guy who asked me how to get to a certain address, which bus to take, and so on. Normally, I would have said I didn't know...because I didn't. But I'm connected...so I bounced to the city's bus website, used their trip planner, figured out where he was going, and gave him detailed directions on which bus to take and where. He wrote it all down and thanked me profusely. After the guy checked his notes, he shook my hand, thanked me again, then rushed off, armed with his information.
A woman, who had been watching the whole exchange smiled at me and said "Technology in action." I just smiled and nodded.
And now, it's time for me to rush off to work!
