The Sciences is the cultural magazine of science—a forum for new ideas, illuminated by the visual arts, in which the sciences from anthropology to zoology join the rest of culture, art and the flux of public life. It is published six times a year by the New York Academy of Sciences for its 43,000 members in more than 100 countries throughout the world, as well as for more than 20,000 nonmember subscribers and newsstand buyers. The readers of The Sciences are affluent, highly educated men and women, many of whom are scientists or physicians in their own right. Nevertheless, our readers, be they scientists, professionals or lay readers, approach the magazine in the spirit of the amateur—for indeed, even scientists are lay readers in disciplines outside their own.

Thus the magazine's mission is not to publish data but to create an interdisciplinary, humanistic context in which scientists can reflect on their work. That mission aims to fulfill the Academy's stated constitutional goal of enhancing the public understanding of science and technology and their implications for society. Following Einstein's memorable credo for popularizing science, The Sciences is a magazine of stories in which the central characters are ideas.
