Campers' Group Bulletin - Fall 2017

I would rather sit on a pumpkin, and have it all to myself, than be crowded on a velvet cushion. - Henry David Thoreau

September 21-25, Cabin Trip, POSTPONED UNTIL AUGUST 2018 - Martha’s Vineyard, Martha's Vineyard MA
Take a day or two off from work and extend your weekend with us to enjoy all that this beautiful island has to offer. Located near the center of the island, we will stay at the comfortable, large and efficiently run Martha’s Vineyard Hostel. It has a large kitchen/dining room, den, and men’s and women’s dorms. A bike path can show you the way, right from the ferry warf... If you want to leave for the island on Friday (not Thursday), park your car in the lot by the Vineyard Fast Ferry departing from Quonset Point, RI, or take the Fast Ferry from New Bedford, MA if you want to leave on either Thursday or Friday. Remember to pack light, bring or rent a bicycle (or rent a moped or smart car), and tour the quaint towns and beautiful shoreline on the many miles of quiet roads and smooth bike paths. The brightly colored Gay Head clay cliffs and lighthouse in Aquinnah is a must-see! You can also take in the flora and fauna by hiking or kayaking. Don’t forget to visit the many shops and seafood restaurants. Taxis and a shuttle bus also service the hostel. Please plan now while there is still room left in the dorms. Do not call the hostel at this time to make reservations.
The payment is for one person, which will only cover the cost to join the group at the hostel. To reserve a spot, send a check for $160 made out to Campers‘ Group, to: Campers’ Group, 48 S. High Street Mt. Vernon, NY 10550. Once the organizer or a trip leader is notified of receipt of your check, you will be added to the RSVP list. October 6-9, Camping Trip, Berentsen’s Campground (near Sam’s Point), Bloomingburg NY
Sam’s Point Preserve, or Sam’s Point Dwarf Pine Ridge Preserve, is a 4,600-acre preserve in Ulster County on the highest point (2,289 ft) of the Shawangunk Ridge in New York. Its unique environment features dwarf pitch pine trees along the ridgetop, with very impressive views. We will have an early departure on Saturday morning for a 10am start to hike in Sam’s Point. The hike will include Verkeederkill Falls, High Point and Indian Rock lookout. This moderate to strenuous circuit hike will be 10.3 miles with 1403 ft of elevation. It is not suitable for beginners, although if accompanied, some can take a shorter, easier route. A trail map is available here. We will also have other hikes available for Sunday, and possibly even Monday. If there is enough interest, we can hike, point-to-point, a section of the Shawangunk Ridge Trail through Wurstsboro Ridge, Roosa Gap, and Shawangunk State Forests (see map 3). October 14-15, Camping Trip, Appalachian Trail Backpack to Wildcat Shelter, Warwick NY
This is a beginner-friendly in-and-out overnight backpacking trip (4 miles total). Wildcat Shelter is located on the Appalachian Trail in NY, and nestled within Sterling Forest State Park . It sits on a ridge at about 1,200 feet. The ridge has great views of Greenwood Lake (If you hike south from the shelter). The shelter is built from wood planks with a shingled roof. It sits on stilts to keep the sleeping area off the ground, like many of the other shelters on the Appalachian Trail. There is a bear box, spring (seasonal, parks have been VERY dry - bring your own water), and a privy located at the shelter as well. There are plenty of tenting areas in the area below the shelter. Lots of flat land in a sort of valley-ish setting. This is a hammocker’s dream site - hundreds of trees spread out for the taking. We will meet at the parking area on NY Rte 17A at 1:00pm and should make it to the shelter around 2pm. Gather firewood, share trail stories, enjoy a late lunch or early dinner. Bring your cameras as we’ll be hitting up Cat Rocks and maybe more views on this gorgeous trail. We’ll break camp around 9:00am Sunday morning.

October 20-22, Camping Trip, Fall Camping at Voorhees State Park, Glen Gardner NJ
Voorhees State Park is located in rural Glen Gardner Borough, central New Jersey. It’s 1400 acres offers camping as well as hiking. We have reserved a group site with some parking on site, and overflow parking nearby. Modern toilets and showers are within walking distance. A map is available here.
The Columbia Trail is a multi-use path that runs for 15 miles starting in the nearby town of High Bridge. November 10-12, Cabin Trip, Wilderness First Aid at Mohican Outdoor Center, Blairstown NJ
This is an offer that will only be extended to active Campers‘ Group members, especially if you backpack or car-camp with us. Campers’ Group will be subsidizing the cost of this trip for a select group of active campers, which includes the Wilderness First Aid Course, lodging and meals Friday evening through Sunday afternoon.
The Wilderness First Aid (WFA) course will teach you how to deal with common medical incidents and accidents that occur in the backcountry. It stresses safety, preparation, crisis avoidance, and the treatment of problems such as blisters, sprains, hypothermia, heat disorders, protection from the elements and more. This course does not go into the depth that the Wilderness First Responder (WFR) course does; however it does provide an important level of understanding about recognizing and treating medical emergencies or injuries. This course also discusses long-term patient care, a reality of backcountry travel. The WFA is a 16-hour course and can be used to re-certify a WFR level of training for an additional $15 fee paid directly to SOLO. CPR certification can be obtained for $35.00 during the course, payment by check or credit only. Please let Mohican Outdoor Center staff know if you desire this training prior to course start date. Cost includes Friday and Saturday night lodging and meals. Questions about Camp Mohican call 908-362-5670. Questions about the program please contact SOLO 603-447-6711. Full price, subsidized by Campers‘ Group: Member/Non-Member - $330.00* (NJ State taxes not included).
*Includes Wilderness First Aid Course, Friday and Saturday lodging, casual Friday dinner buffet 6-8 p.m., Saturday breakfast and dinner, trail lunch on Saturday and Sunday.
*** Those that take the course agree to co-host at least one trip for Campers‘ Group in the future, and to use the skills (or provide instruction) they have learned during the wilderness first aid course.***

To reserve a spot, send a check for $94 made out to Campers‘ Group, to: Campers’ Group, 48 S. High Street Mt. Vernon, NY 10550. Once the organizer or a trip leader is notified of receipt of your check, you will be added to the RSVP list. For immediate inclusion, pay $96.97 via PayPal on the meetup.com page for this trip.
