Promised Land State Park

Promised Land State Park
Canadensis, PA

The park is 5,808 acres, of which 422 acres are Promised Land Lake and 173 acres are Lower Lake. It is adjacent to 8,039 acres of state forest and Bruce Lake Natural Area.

Swimming is permitted during the summer on Promised Land Lake, and canoes are rented. You may also bring your own boat and fish.

There are many hiking trails including a self-guided tour of Conservation Island in the middle of Promised Land Lake. The adjoining Bruce Lake Natural Area contains hiking trails, Bruce Lake, Egypt Meadow Lake, and lots of blueberry bushes.

There are four campgrounds: Lower Lake, the Pines, Deerfield and Pickerel Point. Lower Lake is the most developed, with flush toilets and hot showers, but the least scenic. Pickerel Point, a peninsula jutting out into Promised Land Lake, has spectacular lake sites but no bathrooms, just outhouses. However, you can drive to the bath house on the lake and take a hot shower for 50 cents. (I have heard that the Pickerel Point campsites are being rebuilt and will not be open in 2009. Let's all hope that the new outhouses are less smelly!)

Driving directions: Take Interstate 80 West to exit 309 in Pennsylvania (the second exit after crossing over the Delaware River into Pennsylvania). Take Pennsylvania Route 447 North and follow it carefully (it turns several times) to Canadensis. In Canadensis, turn right onto Pennsylvania Route 390 North which goes through the park. The park office will be on your left.

To get to Pickerel Point from the office, cross 390 and continue a couple of miles until you get to a four-way intersection. Turn left into the Pickerel Point camping area.
