Discovering the Pacific Coast

A visit to the Tillamook Creamery and a drive down the coast.

The drive from Portland to the coast was beautiful but monotonous. It's just endless woods. Nary a gas station, which had me a bit nervous after a while. I am a "full tank" kind of guy.

We did get to Tillamook, though, around lunchtime, and visited the Tillamook Creamery, where they make cheese, yogurt, and most importnantly, ice cream. There is no formal tour of the place, but you can overlook the work floor and see endless blocks of cheese being cut up and vacuum wrapped for freshness.

After lunch (and ice cream) at the Creamery, we headed down the Oregon Coast, which is quite beautiful and rugged. There are huge boulders and rocks along the coast , and it's pretty cold all year, so you don't see too many swimmers.

The road is also somewhat dangerous. Route 101 often has no guard rails, and lots of angry drivers who expect you to take hairpin turns at 75 mph. Sigh. We drove until we got to Florence, OR.
