A City of Books

We discover Powell's, and the joys of efficient transit.

We visited Powell's today in http://homepage.mac.com/sethbook/wc05/PhotoAlbum131.html" target="NewWindow">Downtown Portland . To get there, we took the MAX light-rail train . The Hollywood station was about two blocks from our Econolodge, and we were in town within a half hour.

Powell's City of Books is one of the biggest bookstores I have been in since Foyle's in London. Eric and I spent about three hours in the store just browsing (and buying). The place is big enough to warrant having its own map.

Getting around Downtown Portland is easier since there is a free zone called "Fareless Square" in which all transit is free. One avenue is completely free of car traffic to allow easier bus use. The Arkany Arcade memorializes a grand old period of turn-of-the-century architecture.

That evening, we went back by MAX into town for a nice Thai meal and a walk along the Willamettte River waterfront park .
