The Tripod Has Landed

A visit to the ultramodern Seattle Public Library

Eric and I started the day with a visit to my uncle's house, and then we went into Seattle to visit the modern new Central Branch . Some say it's supposed to look like an open book, but others think it's one of the tripod attackers from the new "War of the Worlds" movies.

Like it or hate it, it is an amazing, cavernous space. We started at the top. A look down to the main floor is vertigo inducing. While modernist and impressive, the library, which is just about over a year old, is already showing some signs of wear and tear. My friend Tony later told me that the architect is known for using cheap materials.

After spending some time looking at census and other family history information in the genealogy area, Eric and I made our way to the ground floor entry area. It's quite a space. And we were able to park right in the library, too.

We then drove south on I-5 to Portland, where we stayed at the Econolodge in the Hollywood district. We went to see "Must Love Dogs" at the Lloyd Center, and then had a great dinner at a Vietnamese-Chinese restaurant on Sandy.
