The Queen of the Coast
Caesarea was built by Herod and built and
neglected by others over two millenia
Caesarea was built by Herod as a place for him to
summer, much like today's Hamptons. Today, many of Israel's leaders and rich
have summer places here. For the lesser-heeled among us, there are shops and
restaurants and grassy areas for impromptu picnics. There are festivals here
also. Performances are held in the old amphitheater. Not all of Caesaria is a
Roman ruin. Others have added on to it over the years.
The hippodrome area was until recently
under a parking lot. Hanoch says that you never know what you might be standing
over. We stopped in Caesarea en route to
Ofer's house in Bat Shlomo. Click here to see photos from Caesarea, which
is part of Israel's network of national parks.
