Good Grief!
For lovers of the funny pages, the Charles
Schulz Museum is a delight.
Santa Rosa was the final home of Charles Schulz,
the creator of the comic strip Peanuts. The Charles Schulz Museum is a wonderful tribute
to the man and his work. The museum itself is well designed, with large open
spaces, an auditorium, and smaller intimate spaces. A ten-minute video details
how involved the man was with the community. Next to the museum is an ice rink
he gave to the town, and where he worked daily on his strip while watching the
skaters. Next to the rink is a large
gift shop with every Snoopy tschotchke ever
made.The museum recreates his study,
and has wonderful exhibits. One was about dogs in comics. It showed the strips
that influenced Schulz, like "Buster Brown," and the strips he influenced in
turn, like "Mutts."Our visit to Santa
Rosa coincided with an open air exhibit of statues of Charlie Brown sporting
various themes. Unfortunately, some were vandalized and one was even kidnapped
and returned for ransom.
