Wedding of the Century

The Macan Markar nuptuals saw 300 guests at the 140-year-old Galle Face Hotel

The Macan Markar nuptuals saw 300 guests at the 140-year-old Galle Face Hotel, which is on the Indian Ocean. It is one of the few Colombo hotels on the waterfront.

We got to the wedding on time, but it took more than an hour for the formal entrance by the bride and groom. But guests kept filing in, and some of Marwaan's younger cousins were distributing floral wristbands to the female guests. The men wore suits and such, and most of the women were in saris, and they were rather spectacular.

Aunty Nufoos explained that this was not a Muslim tradition, but she was at the main door with a brass bottle of rosewater to sprinkle on the bride's family, which is a Muslim tradition.

The Galle Face Hotel is rather glamourous and to get to the men's room, you had to leave the hotel proper and go through a covered terrace area. The ocean is omnipresent out there. You can smell the salt air and hear the waves, and tonight, it rained a bit. I wondered if the hotel had any tsunami damage. It didn't look like it.

The wedding was more a reception. There was a member of the Muslim community to say a few words. Eddie made a speech, as did Kimiko, a friend of Naoko's. Meanwhile, I discovered much later that the registration of the marriage the week before is probably the "real wedding." That's where she wore a white veil and the marriage was official.

So there were no "I do" ceremonies or exchanging of rings or vows at this event. So all my American friends expecting a tale like "Monsoon Wedding" were disappointed.

The seating was open, expect for a special table for the bride and groom and some honored guests, and two reserved tables for the foreign guests. In general, the men and the women separate at these events and sit with one another.

After all the eating there was a lot of picture taking for the official album. My photos are in the link below.
