16 May 2001: La Vuelta a Mexico

So, I am making a return trip to Mexico City, as my good friend Ab, who is Sri Lankan, is still living there, in a neighborhood called Polanco, which is northwest of Chalpultapec Park. I decided to take the day off rather than leave from work. It was good to just not be in a rush all the time. It was quite a month behind me. After a very busy period at work, my friend's Norwegian boyfriend went missing (click here for the original press release about this)--and was eventually found safe and sound in LA (he made a "voluntary disappearance"--jerk). I wound up cancelling a trip to Florida with my mother because he was only missing a week at that time, and there was a press conference to try to get some media exposure.

I was glad to leave all that behind for a long weekend. The flight down was not too crowded. I wound up with three seats to myself. Thank god. Night had fallen by the time we got to Mexico City. The Mexican capital is more than 7000 feet above sea level, and is nestled in a valley. It's amazing to see nothing but mountains and later, the vast expanse that is Mexico City, so much more beautiful from the air than it is on the ground. It looked luminous and golden from the airplane, and vast. It is much more horizontal than it is vertical, so when you do see some skyscrapers, they make more of an impression.

I got in earlier than expected, and the taxi made good time to Polanco. Ab made me a dinner of thai chicken.
