The Bose MediaMate is a nice little speaker. Reasonably priced. Loud enough for a living room or small hall (if you don't want it really loud), but only just. If I wanted something with more oomph (and bass), I've heard good things about the Cambridge Sound Works Model 12.
Epionions seems as good as any for reports from other owners. But I haven't seen much for actual lab results, numbers on power/volume, or other more objective measures. Consumer Reports ($) is good (when they actually do lab tests, which is only some of the time) but doesn't rate a wide variety of hardware.
