New Milford's Vision and Goals
What Does Vision Mean
A vision is broad notion of what you would like the future to be. The goals to realize that vision are also somewhat broad. There is plenty of room for input/discussion/debate on how to reach these goals. Hopefully, you agree with our vision and goals. And hopefully you will participate when it comes time to implement them. You will certainly let us know on November 6th.
New Milford's Vision
New Milford is a growing town. We will respect our historic roots while creating a vibrant 21st century community. We will respect and foster our cultural diversity. We will grow by respecting those who are already here while making room for new families. New Milford will be a place where families can begin, grow and live out their lives.
New Milford's Goals
  1. Create a growth plan which respects all of us. This includes rural homeowners, suburban homeowners, village homeowners, retail and service businesses, industry, farmers, tradesmen and commuters.
  2. Create a vibrant community which will provide a lasting, solid tax base. More and more strip malls will not cut it. We need to attract CEOs who want to place their business and their employees’ families in New Milford.
  3. Create an environment which allows our children to live out their lives here. Today, our young adults flee Connecticut in search of jobs and affordable housing. We need to reverse that trend.
  4. Maintain a quality education system which will feed a vibrant local economy. Our current cycle of not attracting business and then cutting the budget is not a winning strategy.
  5. Maintain policies that allow our seniors to remain an active and vital part of the community.
  6. Maintain our ability to care for ourselves and our children when they fall on hard times. We need to help them get back on their feet and contributing to the community again.
  7. Avoid short-term, pennywise-pound foolish budgeting decisions.
  8. Proactive planning which stays ahead of the growth curve. We need to manage growth rather than it managing us.
  9. Provide information in an easy to understand and easy to access fashion so members of the community can make informed decisions and determine the value they are getting for their tax dollars.
  10. An annual report card which reviews our progress towards achieving these goals.
What To Expect
There is a great deal of hard work involved. Reaching our goals will take more than one year or two. It will take the participation of many people. But if we never get started, we will never get there.
