PPP Configuration
Your IP address:
New Panix accounts use dynamic IP addresses, to help safeguard your privacy. If you requested a static IP, or have an older Panix PPP account with static IP standard, your IP address may be tied to your username. If you want to switch from a static to dynamic IP address, just ask us.
Your PPP dialer should be able to get your IP address from the server, automatically. Most dialers have a checkbox or setting for "obtain automatically"; if yours doesn't, try leaving the IP address field blank, or try entering "0.0.0.0" there.
Gateway/router and DNS:
Just like your IP address, you dialer will get your router (gateway) from the PPP server when you log in. If your software is giving you error messages and login failures because it expects you to type a default gateway address, try entering "0.0.0.0" or "255.255.255.255" as the default gateway.
Some ancient programs may require that you enter nameserver addreses and other data. You may need to upgrade your PPP software if this is the case. Panix's dialup services require dynamic assignment of router addresses.
We don't have step-by-step instructions for UNIX platforms, but the following links may help you:
The Linux PPP HOWTO page at tldp.org is a full step-by-step guide in using the PPP capabilities of Linux.
