Campers' Group Bulletin - Fall 2005

Campers' Group Bulletin - Fall 2005

We met many new friends around the campfire this summer. For the most part, the weather was hot and dry but now it's getting cooler. Soon the leaves will turn red and orange and yellow and gold and brown, and flutter to the ground. If you join us on our fall camping and day trips, you'll see these leaves while some of them are still on the trees.

Concerned about staying warm while you're outdoors? Then give me a call. By wearing the right clothing and staying active, you can enjoy camping and hiking in the fall and be completely comfortable.

To reserve a space on a weekend trip or a day event, call the leaders during the listed time period. If you need information earlier than the dates listed below, call David at 718-897-1448. You can mail us your dues or pay it at the trip or event. One year’s membership costs $12 for an individual or $18 for a family ($8/individual or $12/family if you receive the newsletter by e-mail). Make your check payable to Campers’ Group and mail it to David Levner, 63-36 98th Place #5J, Rego Park, NY 11374.

September 16-18, Taconic State Park, Millerton NY
Get your last dose of summer after the crowds have gone home. We'll hike to majestic Bashbish Falls. Hiking, bicycling. Near Alander Peak and Brace Mountain. Hot showers and flush toilets. NO CALLS BEFORE SEPTEMBER 9.

October 7-10, Assateague Island National Seashore, Assateague MD
Camp behind the dunes on this barrier island off the coast of Maryland. We plan to rent canoes or kayaks and go boating on the bay side of the island. Wild ponies share the island with people. This trip is a longer drive than most; if you can get a few days off from work, then we'll extend our stay. NO CALLS BEFORE SEPTEMBER 30.

Saturday October 22, Day Hike, Mohican Outdoor Center, Blairstown NJ
We drove to Mohican to swim in Catfish Lake several times during the summer, but it was too hot for any serious hikes. In October, we hope to catch the fall foliage at its most colorful. Bring hiking boots, water and lunch. NO CALLS BEFORE OCTOBER 14.
Chet Trotman 732-317-2933 (or 646-279-8048)
October 28-30, North/South Lake State Park, Haines Falls NY
For our last camping trip of 2005, we're returning to this very popular NY State Park. In addition to the lakes for which the park is named, there are numerous hiking trails leading into the surrounding mountains. Some of the trails are rugged and require endurance, but you will be rewarded with spectacular views. One of these trails, the Escarpment Trail goes to Kaaterskill Falls. Flush toilets and hot showers. NO CALLS BEFORE OCTOBER 21.

November 11-13, Cabin Trip, Tyler Hostel, Newtown PA
Join us for a weekend at a comfortable youth hostel in Tyler State Park. You can hike, bicycle, or ride horses. Close to New Hope and Peddler's Village. The hostel is a converted farmhouse that was built before the American revolution; it contains an old-fashioned fireplace, a large fully equipped kitchen, a modern heating system, and bathrooms with showers and flush toilets. Just outside the hostel is a sycamore tree that is older than the building. $16.00 per night. NO CALLS BEFORE NOVEMBER 4.
Suzanne Villegas 201-433-5211
Denise Drossos 718-435-3169
Saturday December 3, Chinese Banquet, Manhattan
The food was so good last year that we're returning again to the Buddha Bodai restaurant in Chinatown. After the meal, if you're up for it, we'll have desert in Little Italy. Bring photos, bear stories, and your ideas for winter and spring events. NO CALLS BEFORE NOVEMBER 26.
David Glass 914-833-2557
December 25, Christmas Dinner, Manhattan
Celebrate the holiday with friends. We'll meet for a Manhattan adventure and a meal in an ethnic restaurant to enjoy the spirit of the season. NO CALLS BEFORE DECEMBER 18 OR AFTER 9 PM ON DECEMBER 24.
